What is a BEST course?
Throughout the whole year, BEST organizes different activities where students of participating universities get the chance to complement their fields of study, discuss educational matters, learn and take their first steps into a worldwide career, increase their international experience, set up contacts, improve their English level and most importantly have fun. Each of our courses is uniting 20-30 engineering and technology students who have something in common: they want to live a unique experience, different from day-to-day school life and are eager to learn new topics! During these days, students will have the opportunity to:
Complement their knowledge in various fields of study
Visit companies, industrial plants and research centres
Take part in case studies and experiments
Follow interesting classes covering many different technological fields
In these events, participants attend lectures given by our university's teaching staff or by experts from companies. At the end of the course students take an exam, which is designed to evaluate the participants' success.
A BEST Course on Technology aims at increasing and widening the professional knowledge of the participant in a certain field of technology about modern technical applications of technology and the latest research achievements.

Fantastic Flows and how to simulate them
Review of Summer Course 2018
At this year's summer course offered by BEST Vienna, it was all about the seemingly magical behaviour of flows and fluids. Twenty students from all over Europe and Canada, chosen out of more than 180 applicants, visited the TU from the 12th to 22nd of July to learn more about fluid dynamics.
The research team around Prof. Alfredo Soldati consisting of Francesco Zonta, Alessio Roccon and Giovanni Armento from the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer challenged the young students with numerical calculations and various experiments, ranging from tiny droplets of wine, which appeared to invert gravity, to a swimming pool full of Oobleck, a non-newtonian fluid, which allowed the students to literally walk on water.
Like every year the international exchange was a central aspect besides the academic part of the course. The students of BEST Vienna introduced to their guests the Austrian culture, the impressive sights of Vienna and the everyday student life at the TU.
BEST Vienna would like to thank the team of Prof. Soldati for providing such interesting and rich lectures, and we would like to congratulate all of the participating students for passing the course very successfully.
Further thanks for their support to realize the project are addressed to the ÖH, the HTU, the TU Wien and the IST Austria for providing an insight into their facilities and research work.

Fluid mechanics often seem like pure magic. Things just happen to float or rise and sink in the air as if some invisible puppeteer is pulling his strings. But don’t let him fool you! He probably just mastered all the mysteries of fluid mechanics!
So, if you ever wondered how these big metal birds are flying, how gigantic water turbines are generating vast amounts of electricity to power your little smartphones or why racing cars are shaped that funnily (believe it or not: Bernie Ecclestone’s weird fetishes only play a minor role in this one) Come to Vienna! We will reveal all our dark and secret knowledge to you, but only if you prove yourself capable of all the life-changing revelations that will come along!
